Claritin (Loratadine) is primarily used to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the throat). It is also used to treat chronic urticaria (hives), reducing itching and the appearance of hives. Loratadine works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.

Claritin (Loratadine) is generally well-tolerated, though some people may experience mild side effects like headache, dry mouth, and drowsiness, with children sometimes showing nervousness or hyperactivity. Serious side effects, such as allergic reactions (e.g., difficulty breathing or swelling of the face), irregular heartbeat, and severe headaches, are rare but require immediate medical attention. If any of these occur, it's important to stop using the medication and consult a healthcare provider

Claritin (Loratadine) should be used cautiously by individuals with liver or kidney issues, as adjustments to the dosage may be required. Although it is typically non-sedating, some people may still experience drowsiness, and caution is advised when performing tasks such as driving until the drug's effects are understood. Additionally, serious allergic reactions, including breathing difficulties and facial swelling, are rare but require immediate medical attention

In the event of a Claritin (Loratadine) overdose, symptoms may include headache, drowsiness, and fast or pounding heartbeat. In severe cases, an overdose can cause serious complications, though it is rare. If an overdose is suspected, it is important to seek immediate medical attention. Contacting Poison Control or going to the nearest emergency room is essential to prevent further harm
