is primarily used to treat seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), a severe and difficult-to-treat form of epilepsy that usually begins in childhood. LGS is characterized by multiple types of seizures, including tonic, atonic, and atypical absence seizures, and rufinamide helps reduce the frequency and severity of these seizures. Although primarily prescribed for LGS, rufinamide may also be used off-label to treat other seizure disorders, especially when other treatments have not been effective. It works by stabilizing the electrical activity in the brain, helping to prevent seizures and improving the quality of life for people living with this condition.

Common side effects of rufinamide include drowsiness, headache, irritability, nausea, and vomiting. Some individuals may experience more serious side effects, such as serious skin reactions, liver problems, or a decrease in the number of blood cells.

Rufinamide should be used with caution in patients with liver problems, as it can affect liver function. It may also interact with other medications, particularly those that affect the central nervous system or have sedative properties. Rufinamide should be used carefully in patients with a history of seizures, as abrupt discontinuation of the drug may increase the risk of seizures. Additionally, it may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so individuals taking rufinamide should avoid activities that require full alertness, such as driving, until they know how the medication affects them.

An overdose of rufinamide (Banzel) can cause serious health issues and requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms may include extreme drowsiness or sedation, lethargy, and uncoordinated movements. Respiratory depression (slow or difficult breathing) and low blood pressure (hypotension) can also occur, potentially leading to further complications. In some cases, an overdose may worsen existing seizures, or cause nausea and vomiting. If an overdose is suspected, it’s crucial to seek emergency medical help immediately. Treatment typically involves supportive care, such as monitoring vital signs, stabilizing breathing, and managing seizures. Since there is no specific antidote for rufinamide overdose, prompt medical intervention is essential to prevent serious harm.
