is primarily used to manage high blood pressure (hypertension) and improve heart function. It works by relaxing blood vessels, which helps lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of complications such as stroke, heart attack, and kidney damage. In patients with heart failure, trandolapril helps the heart pump more effectively, reducing symptoms like shortness of breath and fatigue, while also improving survival rates. After a heart attack, trandolapril may be prescribed to assist in the healing of the heart and reduce the risk of further complications. Additionally, it can be used to protect kidney function in individuals with chronic kidney disease, particularly when the condition is related to high blood pressure or diabetes. By improving circulation and easing the strain on the heart, trandolapril plays an important role in treating cardiovascular and kidney-related conditions.

Common side effects include dizziness, headache, and fatigue. More serious side effects, though rare, can include low blood pressure, kidney problems, elevated potassium levels (hyperkalemia), or a persistent cough. In very rare cases, it may cause angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue), which can be life-threatening.

Trandolapril should be used cautiously in patients with kidney problems, dehydration, or a history of allergic reactions to ACE inhibitors. It should also be avoided during pregnancy due to the potential for harm to the fetus. Additionally, it may interact with other medications, such as diuretics, potassium supplements, or lithium, so it’s important to inform the healthcare provider of all medications being taken. Regular monitoring of kidney function and potassium levels may be recommended during treatment with trandolapril.

An overdose of trandolapril (Mavik) can lead to serious health complications and requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms of overdose include severe low blood pressure (hypotension), which can cause dizziness, fainting, or lightheadedness, especially when standing up. It may also result in rapid or irregular heartbeats, as the heart attempts to compensate for the low blood pressure. In more severe cases, an overdose can lead to kidney problems, including kidney failure, and elevated potassium levels (hyperkalemia), which can cause muscle weakness, irregular heart rhythms, or even paralysis. Additionally, dehydration or excessive fluid loss may occur, further exacerbating the condition. If a trandolapril overdose is suspected, it is essential to seek emergency medical care immediately, where treatment may include intravenous fluids, medications to reverse the effects, and monitoring of kidney function and electrolyte levels.
